Balihari guru apne govind dio bataye ||
Translation:
My teacher (Guru) and lord/God (Govind) both are standing, of whom should I touch the feet (bow to) first? My teacher is greater, God told me.
Explanation:
Kabir Das here presents a situation where he comes across both his teacher and God standing together in front of him and is confused to whom should he first bow and take blessings from. It is then that God tells him that, your teacher, the one who gave you the knowledge of God/God’s existence is greater than God. So, you should first take his blessings then of God.
Here is emphasizes that, although God has created this universe, the known world and life as we know of. But without a teacher no knowledge is possible, not even that of God. It is a teacher that teaches us, enlighten us, with various knowledge, it is a teacher who enables us to use our thinking, logics and reasoning, it is a teacher who enables us to live and thrives in this world. Thus, a man should always listen to the teacher and always pay his 1st respect to his teacher.
Above verse is from the great saint-poet Kabir Das of 14th century India. He was a poet, a devotee, a social reformer, and saint, who through his poems attempted to awaken the human consciousness, show them the path of righteousness. His poems/verses are famously known as ‘Kabir vaani’. His teachings are greatly influenced by and has influenced again the Indian culture, the Indian way of life.
“His writings influenced Hinduism’s Bhakti movement, and his verses are found in Sikhism’s scripture Guru Granth Sahib, the Satguru Granth Sahib of Saint Garib Das, and Kabir Sagar of Dharamdas. Today, his poems are not only sung by Hindus and Sikhs, but also by Muslims, especially Sufis.” [Source: Wikipedia]
